MEMO

TO: The international and earthquake engineering community
FROM: Eduardo Miranda, Stanford University

I am on my way back to the United States after having spent 8 days in Gujarat in a post earthquake reconnaissance trip to the epicentral region of the Kutch January 26, 2001 earthquake.

I was part of an international reconnaissance team led by RMS, Inc. (USA) and with representatives from RMS India (India), OYO corporation (Japan), Karlsruhe University (Germany), Australian Geological Survey (Australia) and the John A. Blume Center for Earthquake Engineering Stanford University (myself).

Based on the information by Dr. Javed N. Malik provided to the OYO team before their departure from Japan and with the help of satellite photos and GPS devices this group of Japanese from OYO was able to locate the surface fault rupture on Feb 15, 2001. They were the first team to locate this rupture. On the following day we were able to locate and document a total extension of approximately 2 km of surface rupture of the Kachchh mainland fault approximately 18 km northwest of Bhachau. The coordinates are N 23° 20' 30.4" E 70 11' 40.1" to N 23 20' 30" E 70 11' 53.9".

Attached please find some digital photographs of the rupture. Please feel free to post these photos in your web site or to use them in presentations, papers or reports. I just ask you to please acknowledge OYO corporation, RMS and myself (Eduardo Miranda, Stanford University).

I have about 40 photos of the rupture. If you are interested in more photos or need additional information on how to reach the site please feel free to contact me at my regular email address at Stanford: miranda@ce.stanford.edu

Please forward this information to any person(s) or organizations interested.

Sincerely,

Dr. Eduardo Miranda
