More About the CIRES Visiting Fellows Program, 2016-2017

CIRES offers Visiting Fellowships at the University of Colorado Boulder for unique opportunities to conduct challenging research in collaboration with recognized leaders in Earth system science. CIRES fellowships are intended to stimulate interdisciplinary research within the Institute through engagement with researchers on campus and in Boulder’s NOAA Laboratories.  Visiting Fellows collaborate with CIRES Fellows in research areas such as atmosphere and ocean processes, cryospheric processes, ecosystem studies, regional and global environmental variability and change, global and regional water cycles, advanced observing systems, geophysics, geochemistry, geomorphology, environmental health, science and technology policy research, energy and environment, and space weather. The CIRES Visiting Fellows Program has attracted more than 250 scientists from around the world over the past 45 years; many have gone on to lasting careers in CIRES and NOAA. Candidates are encouraged to contact CIRES Fellows in advance of application.

Application Review and Selection:
Applications are evaluated by a committee of CIRES Fellows, based on the following criteria:

  • Significance and relevance of the proposed research to the interdisciplinary mission of the Visiting Fellowship program, CIRES and NOAA
  • Quality of a candidate's previous research, potential for future achievement, and potential contribution to environmental science.
  • Benefit of the research to the CIRES enterprise.
  • Degree to which all parties will benefit from the collaborative research and exchange of new ideas.

Priority will be given to candidates with research experience at institutions outside the Boulder scientific community. Current CIRES research faculty, CIRES postdocs, and CIRES graduate students are not eligible to apply. Current or former CIRES Visiting Fellows are not eligible to apply.
