History of the Hydro-Kansas (HK) Project

The HK project is an illustrative example of an integrated framework that the Water, Earth, Biota report presented to the National Science Foundation (WEB, Gupta 2000; 2001). The Cooperative Atmosphere Surface Exchange Studies project (CASES; LeMone et al. 2000) addressed one objective of the WEB report, which was to promote the investigation of nonlinear land-atmosphere interaction by focusing on the integrative and interdisciplinary nature of watersheds, a natural organizing surface element, to understand coupled biological and physical processes. The Whitewater Basin was also the site for a recent interdisciplinary water cycle study conducted by the Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratories (Miller et al. 2005).
