Phase I (1996-2000)

Gupta et al. (1996) published the first paper towards developing a physical theory of spatial flood statistics for rainfall-runoff events. They considered highly idealized and deterministic self-similar nested channel networks in their analysis. The theory combined physical processes with the geometry and topology of channel network patterns and statistical variability. Results in Gupta et al. (1996) were generalized in many directions for idealized mean self-similar channel networks; see Gupta (2004a, 2004b) for brief reviews.
