To address the pressing need to generalize the theory of floods to real channel networks and to use real rainfall and stream flow data sets in testing the theory, the HK group has developed a sophisticated GIS watershed analysis and dynamical modeling tool called CUENCAS. CUENCAS is an information and numerical infrastructure for assimilating field data and conducting theoretical experiments. CUENCAS includes facilities to partition basins extracted from DEMs into links and hillslopes that exist on a terrain, identifies stream channels, and assigns Strahler order to streams (Fig. A1). It includes a flow routing architecture that is based on conservation laws and physical parameterizations (Mantilla and Gupta 2005; Mantilla et al. 2006; Furey and Gupta 2005).
