Phase III (2003-2004)

Kean and Smith (2005) developed and tested a new, cost-effective stream gauging methodology based on a fluid mechanical model of streamflow in a geomorphically stable channel. This method requires high-resolution surveys of streambed and floodplain microtopography and measurements of stage height through time, which can be done automatically with inexpensive instruments. This unique approach eliminates the need for a long streamflow record to develop stage-discharge relationships, and is of comparable or better accuracy than current approaches for calculating discharge. Further progress was made to develop the theory of peak flows described in Phase I using data sets from two Agriculture Research Service basins in MS and AZ (Furey and Gupta 2005; Mantilla et al. 2006).
