Developing the Essential Principals and Fundamental Concepts of Climate Literacy Mark McCaffrey1 Working closely with the NOAA Office of Education and Climate Office, CIRES Outreach has been an integral leader in the development of a framework for Climate Literacy which has recently been published as a brochure and is being distributed at the National Science Teacher Association conference. Inspired in part by the Ocean Literacy framework developed by NOAA, National Geographic and the National Marine Educators Association in 2004, the Climate Literacy effort is aimed at providing authoritative information tied to the National Science Education Standards for teachers in formal education. Building on the work of the AAAS Project 2061 Benchmarks, and endorsed by NOAA, AMS, NCAR/UCAR, US Forest Service, CIRES and others, the Climate Literacy framework serves not only science teachers in classrooms, but policy makers, environmental educators and the general public. This poster will review the development and finalization of the framework, and discuss plans for supplemental and supporting products and programs. |
