Open Positions
Postdoctoral Position for Aircraft Measurements & Analysis, posted July 2015
A postdoctoral position is available in the Jimenez Research Group in CIRES and the Dept. of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Colorado-Boulder. The successful candidate will participate in the repeated deployment of a highly customized Aerodyne HR-ToF-AMS aboard the NASA DC-8 Aircraft [1] for the NASA EVS-2 AToM mission [2] (field phase 2016 to 2018, see schedule at [3]). The AToM mission is a unique opportunity to study the global background of trace gases, aerosols and black carbon throughout the troposphere and the seasons and assess its sources and chemistry. The successful candidate will be involved at all levels with the scientific analysis of this large AMS dataset and is expected to lead several aspects of this analysis. He/she would also have the opportunity to be involved in other aircraft projects (KORUS-AQ, CAMPEx), pending funding. The position will require a minimum of 8 weeks in the field during Summer 2016.
A Ph.D. in chemistry, atmospheric sciences, environmental engineering, or a related discipline is required. Excellent skills in the operation and maintenance of advanced instrumentation, ideally acquired by involvement in instrument design and construction are essential. Experience with mass spectrometry, vacuum technology, aerosol instrumentation, as well as computer programming and/or complex data analysis (especially Igor Pro) are highly desirable. Experience with laboratory or field studies of atmospheric chemistry is also desirable.
Opportunities for involvement on chamber experiments in the new CU-Boulder Environmental Chamber Facility are also possible.

Job Description
The Lab/Logistics Assistant will perform the following tasks for all or some of the 3 research groups. Training will be provided as required.
- Perform general lab administration, such as working with new and departing group members, managing group property and supplies, general shipping, coordinating equipment and building maintenance issues, moving equipment and shipping boxes to / from storage locations, coordinating visitor logistics & schedules, and similar tasks.
- Organize, maintain, and repair (or co-ordinate repair) of laboratory, field, and instrument computers, as well as data servers, CPU clusters, and their connections. Training will be provided to the level of Dell Field Technician.
- Maintain and expand web & wiki pages for the groups, including simple web-based databases.
- Perform basic monitoring, maintenance, and calibration of research-grade instruments.
- Coordinate and co-organize field and lab campaign logistics, shipping, setup, operation, repairs, and teardown.
- Perform logistical planning including organization of meetings (including web-enabled meetings) and organizing group travel to conferences and field studies.
- Serve as purchaser for lab and field supplies, and reallocating those purchases to the appropriate grants in the CU accounting software system.
- Serve as proctor for environmental health and safety, including ordering chemicals, maintaining the chemical database for each lab, supervising the correct storage of chemicals in the labs, coordinating with CU for disposal of chemical waste, and acting as lab eco-leader.
- Serve as proctor for radiation safety, including monitoring low-level radioactive sources used in research, coordinating permits and administration with CU, as well as the transport of sources between labs at CU and the shipment of sources to / from field studies.
- Keep track of hours spent working for each group and tasks pending using shared computer software.
- Perform other tasks that may develop within the research and education missions of the groups.
- Be present in the offices/laboratories during standard working hours (~9/10AM-5/6PM) and occasionally work more intensive hours during workshops or laboratory and field campaigns
Salary and Benefits:
- Salary will be commensurate with skills and experience, in the range $29k-$39k.

Postdoctoral Researcher for WINTER aircraft field project, posted April 2014
A postdoctoral position is available in the Jimenez Research Group in CIRES and the Dept. of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Colorado-Boulder. The successful candidate will be responsible for the deployment of a highly customized Aerodyne HR-ToF-AMS aboard the NCAR C-130 Aircraft for the Wintertime Investigation of Transport Emissions and Reactivity (WINTER) field project (January/February 2015). WINTER is a unique opportunity to study oxidative and multiphase chemistry of gases and aerosols during the wintertime and its impact on the winter haze over the Eastern US Seaboard. The successful candidate will lead the scientific analysis of this unique AMS dataset post-campaign. He/she would also have the opportunity to be involved in several future aircraft projects later on (GAMBAI, AToM), pending funding. The position will require a minimum of 6 weeks in the field during Jan/Feb. 2015.

Postdoctoral Position in Secondary Organic Aerosol Modeling, posted Sept. 2013
A postdoctoral position is available in the Jimenez Research Group in CIRES and the Dept. of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Colorado-Boulder, in collaboration with the Hodzic/Madronich groups at NCAR. The position will involve modeling of Secondary Organic Aerosol (SOA) formation in field studies and comparison to highly detailed ambient data. Modeling will use a range of approaches from parameterized models to the GECKO-A fully explicit model. Application will focus the on both ambient & Potential Aerosol Mass (PAM) flow reactor data from the CalNex field study, but also potentially including the BEACHON-RoMBAS and SOAS field studies, as well as laboratory studies. Example of prior publications include Dzepina et al. 2009, Dzepina et al. 2011; Lee-Taylor et al., 2011 and Waxman et al. 2013.
A Ph.D. in chemistry, atmospheric sciences, environmental engineering, or a related discipline is required. Postdoc Position in OA Regional Modeling, advertised in Fall of 2011
A position in regional modeling of organic aerosols (OA) with a focus on the WRF/Chem model, will become available at NCAR in Fall 2011, for a collaborative project with the University of Colorado. The successful candidate will adapt and implement new mechanisms and parameterizations of OA and SOA formation, evolution, and loss into WRF/Chem, and evaluate the results using observations from recent large field campaigns (e.g. MILAGRO, BEACHON, GVAX etc.).
The ideal candidate will have:
- A Ph.D. in Chemistry, Atmospheric Sciences, or a related discipline.
- Experience with atmospheric chemistry & transport modeling (e.g. regional or global models).
Other modeling experience such as LES, master mechanism, box etc. is also beneficial.

Staff Scientist Position, posted Nov. 2009
A Staff Scientist position in experimental atmospheric chemistry is available starting in early 2010. This position will be 50% "hard" funding (provided by CIRES and not tied to grants) and 50% soft money (tied to grants of the groups below) for at least 3 years, with the intention of continuing indefinitely. It will be centered in the Jimenez group (>= 50% time) and will be shared with the Volkamer Group (up to 50% time), and possibly with other atmospheric chemistry groups within CIRES & Chemistry (Tolbert and Vaida groups). The Staff Scientist will help train and work with students and postdocs, and co-supervise laboratory and field experiments and data analysis and modeling studies on atmospheric chemistry. An ideal candidate would be someone who loves research but prefers working as part of a group rather than working on a faculty position. A postdoctoral position is available in the Jimenez Research Group in CIRES and the Dept. of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Colorado-Boulder. This position focuses on field studies of organic aerosol sources and processing using high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometry (HR-ToF-AMS) and thermal desorption aerosol GC-MS (TAG) as part of the CalNex-LA-2010 and BEACHON-SRM-2011 field studies.
