Postdoc Position in OA Regional Modeling, advertised in Fall of 2011

A position in regional modeling of organic aerosols (OA) with a focus on the WRF/Chem model, will become available at NCAR in Fall 2011, for a collaborative project with the University of Colorado. The successful candidate will adapt and implement new mechanisms and parameterizations of OA and SOA formation, evolution, and loss into WRF/Chem, and evaluate the results using observations from recent large field campaigns (e.g. MILAGRO, BEACHON, GVAX etc.).

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Ph.D. in Chemistry, Atmospheric Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with atmospheric chemistry & transport modeling (e.g. regional or global models).

Other modeling experience such as LES, master mechanism, box etc. is also beneficial.

The initial appointment will be for 1 year but the expectation is of renewal for up to 2 more years upon satisfactory performance. The start date should be in Spring or Summer 2012. Applications will be reviewed starting in Oct. 2011, and until the position is filled.

Staff Scientist Position, posted Nov. 2009

A Staff Scientist position in experimental atmospheric chemistry is available starting in early 2010. This position will be 50% "hard" funding (provided by CIRES and not tied to grants) and 50% soft money (tied to grants of the groups below) for at least 3 years, with the intention of continuing indefinitely. It will be centered in the Jimenez group (>= 50% time) and will be shared with the Volkamer Group (up to 50% time), and possibly with other atmospheric chemistry groups within CIRES & Chemistry (Tolbert and Vaida groups). The Staff Scientist will help train and work with students and postdocs, and co-supervise laboratory and field experiments and data analysis and modeling studies on atmospheric chemistry. An ideal candidate would be someone who loves research but prefers working as part of a group rather than working on a faculty position. The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Ph.D. in Chemistry, Atmospheric Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Postdoctoral experience
  • Ability to make a commitment of 3-5 years to this position
  • Experience with advanced instrumentation and data interpretation, such as mass spectrometry, optical spectroscopy, vacuum technology etc.
  • Interest in working with students and postdocs and helping train them on lab techniques, see e.g. this list of lab skills
  • Ability to travel to field studies to assist students & postdocs, especially during the setup phase and in case of problems (~4-8 weeks total travel time per year on average)
  • Willingness to participate on aircraft-based field studies
  • Desire and ability to communicate and work with multiple students and postdocs
  • Experience with computer programming and data analysis, especially Igor Pro, but otherwise Matlab, Fortran, IDL etc.
  • Experience with data acquisition programming with Labview (or similar software packages)
  • Interest on having his/her own research projects, presenting results at conferences, and publishing some first-author papers
  • Interest on participating on (and eventually potentially leading) proposal-writing

Postdoctoral Position in Aerosol Mass Spectrometry, posted Oct. 2009

A postdoctoral position is available in the Jimenez Research Group in CIRES and the Dept. of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Colorado-Boulder. This position focuses on field studies of organic aerosol sources and processing using high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometry (HR-ToF-AMS) and thermal desorption aerosol GC-MS (TAG) as part of the CalNex-LA-2010 and BEACHON-SRM-2011 field studies. Both field studies will provide excellent research opportunities and complementary data from many advanced instruments. Information on these studies can be found at:

A Ph.D. in chemistry, atmospheric sciences, environmental engineering, or a related discipline is required. Experience in experimental research is needed. Experience with instrument design and construction, advanced instrumentation use, computer programming, and/or complex data analysis is highly desirable. Experience with mass spectrometry, vacuum technology, aerosol instrumentation, Igor Pro or another data analysis package, Labview, or field studies are also desirable. Ability to travel to field studies, to work in a team with members of our group and multiple collaborators, and to lead the writing of papers for peer-reviewed journals is essential.
