From summit of Pk 12898 (which we nicknamed Lazy Dog Peak for the shape of a snowfield on its western side). Hide... Initial view is eastward over the Missouri Lakes basin. A prominent rock glacier descends into the southernmost (rightmost) lake from the flanks of Savage Peak. The peak just reaching the horizon in dead center is Homestake Peak (on the Continental Divide) rising over the Homestake Creek drainage (out of view below the nearer ridge is the Homestake Reservior, part of Colorado Springs's water supply system). Just over that ridge to the right peaks of the Mosquito Range along the Continental Divide are visible. To the left of Homestake Peak the southern end of the Gore Range is just in front of the Tenmile Range. The Climax molybdenum mine is towards the right side of the Tenmile Range and might be visible as a lighter patch of the range. Panning to the right, Savage Peak comes into view as the large foreground peak. Galena Mtn is the second prominent peak to the left of Savage Peak along the Homestake Range ridgeline; east and west Buffalo Peaks might be visible to the right. Farther right the view to the south is over the dramatic Carter Creek canyon. Just right of Savage Peak the view is of the Sawatch Range; below that some browner peaks are Wildcat Mtn and Selier Peak near the headwaters of the Fryingpan River. Somewhat to the right, the mountains rising out of the Fryingpan River valley are the Williams Mountains. Right from there the Elk Mountains are the skyline (across the Roaring Fork from the WIlliams Mountains). On the skyline over a timbered gap in the Williams Range are the Maroon Bells (Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak) with a pair of vertical snow stripes; Aspen is in the Roaring Fork valley directly on line with Maroon Bells and the top of the Aspen ski area is visible below and just left of the Bells. Farther right, the light-colored peak on the skyline is Snowmass Mtn. A prominent peak to the right of Snowmass is Capitol Peak; Mt. Daly is a short distance farther right. Much farther right is a lonely peak above timberline; this is Mt. Sopris. The distant skyline farther right is part of Grand Mesa. Farther right the near peaks of this part of the Sawatch Range cut off distant views; the peak nearly due west (right of Sopris) is Pk 12977. A brief glimpse of distant skyline to the right of that is part of the Flattops Wilderness. Below that, Lake 11790 (Carter Creek's headwaters) lies to the left of glacial-moraine impounded Blodgett Lake (part of the headwaters of Cross Creek). The leftmost high peak behind Blodgett Lake is Fools Peak. The distant peak over the right side of Blodgett Lake is Gold Dust Peak. Farther to the right, the high peak prominently standing over a frested part of Cross Creek is Jackson Peak. Below and somewhat to the right is an oranger ridge, Middle Mtn., which has some old mining activity on its north end. Grouse Mountain is above timberline farther right. The Gore Range is visible beyond Cross Creek canyon. The Holy Cross Range is to the right, with Mt. of the Holy Cross the highest point on this ridgeline (the cross is on the east side, out of our view). Farther right (to the northeast) is flat-topped Whitney Peak. Beyond Whitney Peak are peaks of Summit County near Silverthorne. 20 July, 2013. |
