The OA mechanism in CESM has been recently updated (as in [http://www.atmos-chem-phys.net/16/7917/2016/acp-16-7917-2016.html Hodzic et al. ACP (2016)]), and additional updates for isoprene chemistry will be implemented (e.g. following [http://www.atmos-chem-phys.net/16/1603/2016/ Marais et al. (2016)]). The OA simulations will be compared to unique data from the [https://espo.nasa.gov/home/atom/content/ATom NASA ATom project] acquired by the Jimenez Group as well as other available aircraft and ground datasets. | ||

Postdoctoral Position on Global Organic Aerosol Modeling using NCAR CESM, Posted 20-Dec-2016
A postdoctoral position is available in the Jimenez Group in CIRES and the Dept. of Chemistry at the University of Colorado-Boulder, collaboratively with Alma Hodzic and Louisa Emmons at the NCAR Atmospheric Chemistry Observations and Modeling Laboratory. The successful candidate will investigate the sources, properties, processing, and fate of organic aerosols (OA) using the NCAR Climate Earth System Model (CESM). CESM will then be used to investigate the OA sources and fate under future climate scenarios. The OA mechanism in CESM has been recently updated (as in Hodzic et al. ACP (2016)), and additional updates for isoprene chemistry will be implemented (e.g. following Marais et al. (2016)). The OA simulations will be compared to unique data from the NASA ATom project acquired by the Jimenez Group as well as other available aircraft and ground datasets.
A Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, chemistry, physics, environmental engineering, or a related discipline is required. Experience with computer modeling in FORTRAN, in particular for regional or global models is needed. Experience in complex data analysis using for example NCL, IDL, Python, Igor Pro, Matlab is highly desirable. Independence, drive and collaboration are important and will be encouraged in order to develop the candidate’s career.
Background information about the research groups and previous publications and projects is available at the Jimenez Group, Hodzic and Emmons web pages. Boulder is a great place to live, and it also houses the greatest concentration of atmospheric scientists in the world, thanks to the combined strengths of CU, and the NCAR and NOAA National Labs.
To apply, please submit an application via email to <jose.jimenez@colorado.edu> and <alma@ucar.edu>, with a cover letter describing your research interests, a CV, date of availability, 2-3 first-author journal papers in PDF (submitted papers can also be included), and a list of 4-5 references who are very familiar with your research work. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the expectation of renewal for a second year upon satisfactory performance. The University of Colorado is an equal opportunity employer.
Review of applications will start on 15-Jan-2017, and continue until the position is filled. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as possible. If that is not possible, please email Jose and Alma to alert us that your application is coming and the expected completion date.
Postdoctoral Position on Indoor Air Chemistry using CIMS, Posted 12-Dec-2016
A postdoctoral position is available in the Jimenez Group in CIRES and the Dept. of Chemistry at the University of Colorado-Boulder, collaboratively with the Ziemann group. The successful candidate will investigate the chemistry of indoor air (gas, aerosol, and surfaces) in field studies (e.g. at a Museum, Athletic Center, and Student Dining Center) and in the laboratory. A large suite of start-of-the-art instrumentation is available for the project, within two highly dynamic research groups. This project is funded by a program just started by the Sloan Foundation and will involve two graduate students in addition to this postdoc, with clearly defined tasks for each person in a highly collaborative environment. The key tool will be a real-time High-Resolution Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer (CIMS) including a FIGAERO and other inlets, I-, acetate, EESI, and NO3- sources, and a new Ion Mobility Spectrometer-CIMS. The position may involve use of the new CU Atmospheric Chamber Facility. A recent publication on indoor air chemistry by our group is here.
A Ph.D. in chemistry, atmospheric sciences, environmental engineering, or a related discipline is required. Skills in the operation and data interpretation for advanced chemical instrumentation, ideally CIMS, are important. Experience with mass spectrometry, vacuum technology, aerosol instrumentation, as well as computer programming and/or complex data analysis (especially Igor Pro) are highly desirable. Experience with laboratory or field studies of atmospheric chemistry is also desirable. Independence, drive and collaboration are important and will be encouraged in order to develop the candidate’s career.

Boulder is a great place to live, and it also houses the greatest concentration of atmospheric scientists in the world, thanks to the combined strengths of CU and the NOAA and NCAR National Labs.
To apply, please submit an application via this CU Careers Link (current link is for a different postdoc position, but you can still use it till the new one is ready), with a cover letter describing your research interests, a CV, date of availability, 2-3 first-author journal papers in PDF, and a list of 4-5 references who are very familiar with your research work. The initial appointment will be for one year. Participation on the initial field study in April and May 2017 is required, although it could be followed by a return to the current group to finish up work, followed by a final move to Boulder by 1-Sep-2017. The expectation is for annual renewal for two additional years upon satisfactory performance. The University of Colorado is an equal opportunity employer.
Review of applications will start immediately, and continue until the position is filled. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as possible. If that is not possible, please email Jose to alert that your application is coming and the expected completion date.
Postdoctoral Position on Lab Gas-Particle Partitioning using CIMS, Posted Sep. 2106
A postdoctoral position is available in the Jimenez Group in CIRES and the Dept. of Chemistry at the University of Colorado-Boulder, collaboratively with the Ziemann group. The successful candidate will investigate gas-particle partitioning of organic species in the laboratory, including how the dynamics and equilibria are affected by particle composition and phase state, molecular identity, humidity, temperature, OA, and other factors. A large suite of start-of-the-art instrumentation is available for the project, within two highly dynamic research groups. The key tool will be a real-time High-Resolution Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer (CIMS) including a FIGAERO and other inlets, I-, acetate, and NO3- sources, and a new Ion Mobility Spectrometer-CIMS. Participation in field studies and other ongoing projects is also possible. The position will involve extensive use of the new CU Atmospheric Chamber Facility, and also some computer modeling of partitioning equilibrium and kinetics.
