These are the instructions for email lists in the CU List server. For additional detail see http://www.colorado.edu/ITS/Email_Lists.

This system includes the following lists:

  • jimenez-group
  • volkamer-group
  • tolbert-group
  • aerosols
  • anyl-env-seminars

Update October 2016:

We have moved away from using the listproc system detailed below, and instead use Google Groups. The addresses are the same, but @googlegroups.com instead of @list.colorado.edu .

How to add and remove addresses from the list

This list is controlled by mailing list management software known as listproc. To make any changes to your list's configuration, subscribers or to get information about listproc commands, you send e-mail to listproc@lists. Colorado.EDU with the subject line blank and the listproc commands you wish to issue in the message body. Please do not send listproc commands to listmaster@lists.Colorado.EDU, that address is for list creation, list problems and questions regarding the list processing software.

Individual Users Adding and Removing Themselves

  • For users to subscribe themselves to this list, they will address messages to

listproc@lists.Colorado.EDU with the contents of their message being (remember that the <>'s in all commands just mean 'put your stuff here' so don't include them):

       subscribe <list> <their-full-name>
  • To remove themselves from the list they would again address a message to

listproc@lists.Colorado.EDU with the contents of their message being:

       unsubscribe <list>

List Manager Adding or Removing People

  • As list owner, you are able to add and remove users from your list

as well. Because it is difficult to know the exact address that a user needs to use within the listproc software, we do not recommend this practice. To add a user to your list, you would address a message to listproc@lists.Colorado.EDU with the contents of your message being:

   add <list> <list-password> <address> <name>

e.g.

   add <list> <list-password> userj@spot.Colorado.EDU Joe User
  • to remove a user from your list, similarly, you would do:
   delete <list> <list-password> <address>

e.g.

   delete <list> <list-password> userj@spot.Colorado.EDU

  • If you are removing an address from your list that was causing bounced messages,

please make sure to use the quiet option on the delete command to prevent an unsubscribe confirmation message from being sent to the bad address and then bounced to listmaster, eg:

   quiet delete <list> <list-password> <address>

If you are using a mail user agent, like Pine or Eudora, that does not allow you to pass long lines, i.e. automatically wraps long lines, you must use the & character to continue long lines, e.g.

   add <list> <list-password> userj@spot.Colorado.EDU &
   Joe User

NOTE: the & character must be the last character on the line, ie followed by a carriage return and nothing else.

Sending Messages to the List

To send to the list address messages to <list>@lists.Colorado.EDU

In case of Problems

  • If you have questions or problems regarding the listproc software, please

contact listmaster@lists.Colorado.EDU or check out the email help files. If you have access to a PostScript printer and would like a copy of the list owner manual, send the command

get doc ownerman.ps

...to listproc@lists.Colorado.EDU This will return the list owner manual to you via e-mail and you can then print it out.

  • NOTE: every list takes computing resources whether it is used or not.

Please let us know if your list becomes inactive so that we can remove it and use those resources for another list. Further, you are responsible for the maintenance of your list and for fulfilling reasonable requests from your subscribers. As Listmaster, I will be happy to lend a helping hand, but you must take a proactive interest in your list.
