Postdoctoral Position in Aerosol Mass Spectrometry

A postdoctoral position is available in the Jimenez Research Group in CIRES and the Dept. of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Colorado-Boulder. This position focuses on field studies of organic aerosol sources and processing using high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometry (HR-ToF-AMS) and thermal desorption aerosol GC-MS (TAG) as part of the CalNex-LA-2010 and BEACHON-SRM-2011 field studies. Both field studies will provide excellent research opportunities and complementary data from many advanced instruments. Information on these studies can be found at:

A Ph.D. in chemistry, atmospheric sciences, environmental engineering, or a related discipline is required. Experience in experimental research is needed. Experience with instrument design and construction, advanced instrumentation use, computer programming, and/or complex data analysis is highly desirable. Experience with mass spectrometry, vacuum technology, aerosol instrumentation, Igor Pro or another data analysis package, Labview, or field studies are also desirable. Ability to travel to field studies, to work in a team with members of our group and multiple collaborators, and to lead the writing of papers for peer-reviewed journals is essential. Background information about the research group, techniques, and previous publications and projects is available at:

Four papers that describe the techniques and scientific problems that our group focuses on can be downloaded from:

and many additional publications can be downloaded from our group publications page:

To apply, please send an email describing your research interests, a CV, date of availability, 2-3 first-author journal paper reprints in PDF, and a list of 4 references to Prof. Jose L. Jimenez (jose.jimenez@colorado.edu). The initial appointment will be for one year starting around Jan. 2010, with the expectation of annual renewal for two additional years upon satisfactory performance. Later start dates are also possible. The University of Colorado is an equal opportunity employer.

Lab Manager / Staff Scientist Position

A Lab Manager / Staff Scientist position will be open in late 2009. This position will likely be shared with other atmospheric chemistry groups within CIRES & Chemistry, such as the Volkamer, Tolbert, and Vaida groups. This person will help train and work with students and postdocs and co-supervise participate laboratory and field experiments on atmospheric chemistry.

The initial appointment will be for 1 year but the expectation is of renewal for 3-5 years upon satisfactory performance. Please email Jose if you are interested in this position. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Ability to make a commitment of 3-5 years to this position
  • Interest in working with students and postdocs and helping train them on lab techniques, see e.g. this list of lab skills
  • Ability to travel to field studies to assist students & postdocs, especially during setup phase and in case of problems (~4-6 weeks total travel time per year on average)
  • Willingness to participate on aircraft-based field studies
  • Experience with advanced instrumentation, such as mass spectrometers, optical spectroscopy, vacuum technology etc.
  • Desire and ability to communicate and work with multiple students and postdocs
  • Experience with computer programming and data analysis, especially Igor Pro, but otherwise Matlab, IDL etc.
  • Experience with data acquisition programming with Labview (or similar software packages)
  • Interest on having his/her own research projects and publish some first-author papers
  • Interest on participating on (and eventually potentially leading) proposal-writing
