Hide... View from the edge of the inner part of the western Grand Canyon east from the Toroweap Campground. From the bottom, units visible are the Cambrian Bright Angel Shale, the Cambrian Muav Limestone, the Devonian Temple Butte Frm, the Mississippian Redwall Limestone (forming the prominent cliff), the Pennsylvian-Permian Supai Group with its Esplanade member forming the prominent bench. Above the bench are the Permian Hermit Formation, Coconino Sandstone, Toroweap Formation, and Kaibab Limestone capping the snowy mesa to the right. A small cinder cone at right on the Esplanade Sandstone marks the east edge of the Uinkaret (Grand Canyon) volcanic field. At the left edge of the side canyon entering the Colorado upstream (leftward) of the viewpoint the Upper Mississippian Surprise Canyon Formation is mapped (but not easily recognized in this view) on top of the Redwall Limestone.
