Silverton is on the western San Juan Mountains and the northern terminus of the Durango and Silverton Railroad (a line left from the old Denver and Rio Grande narrow gauge system; one of the trains is reversing direction at the near end of Silverton). From this view on the south edge of the Silverton caldera you can see the shape of the caldera from the glaciated valley Silverton lies in. The caldera is one of the younger calderas in the massive San Juan volcanic center and is the most western of all. Precambrian basement rocks outside the caldera are visible at the far right of the image. Large avalanche chutes like those that make this road one of the worst in the U.S. for avalanches are visible across the canyon. July, 2006.
