East of Pheonix, the Superstition Mountains contains some spectacular exposures of the interior of some Cenozoic calderas. Here we are on the eastern edge of the Tortilla Flat caldera. Initial view is NE at some of the caldera margin faults, which drop the fill breccia down from thinner exposures to the east to the thicker exposures to the west. A somewhat older volcanic plug is barely visible near the creek down and left. Views east show the Precambrian rocks without volcanic cover on the skyline. March, 2002.
