The Waterpocket Fold is the main feature of Capitol Reef National Park. Here the view is from the overlook off of Upper Muley Twist Canyon. Initial view to the north of the main Capitol Reef area far in the distance, looking along the fold. The two strike valleys are in the upper Jurassic sediments (left valley) centered near the Entrada and Morrison Formations and the lower Cretaceous (lower Mancos shale, right valley). Buttes to the east are capped by sandstones equivalent to the Mesa Verde Group and the view is from the Navajo Sandstone. (NPS stratigraphic section is online). Over those buttes to the east are the Tertiary laccoliths of the Henry Mountains. March, 2002.
