Plate tectonics eloquently explains how most mountain ranges form by the collision or subduction of plates. Every introductory geology textbook contains the following figures.
Plate boundaries, such as the ones illustrated in the above schematic diagrams, are recognized empirically by mapping the frequency of earthquakes. Such massive motion of the lithosphere and crust will inevitably result it large earthquakes.
