It is hard to imagine that the entire state of Colorado, and most of Wyoming was covered by the ocean, before the Rocky Mountains formed. The Western Interior Seaway extended from the Gulf of Mexico northward to the north slope of Alaska. Thick sequences of marine shales and limestones were deposited throughout Colorado and Wyoming. Fossils from these rock formations include Plesiosaurs, Mosasaurs, Ammonites and other marine organisms that lived during the late Cretaceous. ![]()
