The Poison Canyon Formation contains cross-bedded sandstones and underlays the Raton Formation which consists of conglomerate and conlomeratic sandstones with abundant pebbles of gneiss, quartz, and feldspar, recording an episode of erosion from the laramide highland to the west. These are Late Cretaceous in age (~68 mya).
