D.O. No. 728. (Survey)

Revenue and Agricultral Department

Simla the 1st September 1886

My Dear Medlicott,

1.   Your letter of the 19th May last, in which you conveyed your observations upon Professor James Geikie's suggestion that a pupil of his, Mr Pargati Nath Datta, should be nominated to the Geological Survey, was sent on onward as intended by you, to Sir William Muir for communication to Professor Geikie.  I have now received the latter's reply, a copy of which I enclose for your perusal.

2.    Meanwhile the Government of India had received officially from the Secretary of State a suggestion that Mr. Datta should be appointed to the Survey, and they have after fully considering your views on the subject, informed his Lordship that they would have no objection if it were decided to give Mr. Datta an appointment. I may add that your objections to the nomination to the Department of Natives as expressed in your letter No. 292 dated the 17th ultimo, have been placed before the S------ who has been left to decide the question.

Yours sincerely,

C. J. Lyell

To H. B. Medlicott Esq.
