Errata from

Introduction to Applied Geophysics: Exploring the Shallow Subsurface,

by Burger, Sheehan, and Jones

History of updates to the geophysical software (including known issues) is here.

There is a new printing of this text in October of 2023 from Cambridge Press. Most of the errata in the second printing is corrected; a couple sneaked through as listed immediately below. There is ongoing work on a new edition (Burger, Sheehan, Jones and Levandowski), hopefully ready sometime in 2024.

p. 30, Figure 2.15. Most of the angles are not drawn accurately (an interesting exercise for the reader is to draw them correctly).

p. 73, eqn 3.20. Delete the second "=". Should be "h1=" with no more equals.

p. 89, first full sentence. "Note that the energy source–geophone offset and the geophone intervals are different" should be either be dropped or add " than those in Figure 3.6".

p. 98, eqns 3.42 and 3.43. Should be θic - β in 3.42 and θic + β in 3.43

p. 175, Figure 4.14. Arrow on left edge should only extend over the top three layers (total thickness of the top three layers is 60m).

p. 178, Figure 4.15. The lefthand scale in the top and bottom graphs should be divided by 10 (so 10,000 instead of 100,000). [Sorry, in fixing one mistake we added a couple others]

p. 231, Figure 4.39(a). The elevation of the dashed line marked "Datum" should be noted as ed.

p. 438, equation 7.9. FEshould equal the square root of HE2 and ZE2 (replace the HZ2 with ZE2)

Second Printing (summer 2015) errata

(You can tell the printings apart from the sleeve of the DVD that is included--the one with the 2015 software (spine says "DVD included" instead of "CD included") is the second printing.)

Yes, it is true. We set out to fix mistakes from the first printing and, well, some new things emerged and a few old problems turned out to be missed.

p. 23, Figure 2.11.The angles from the horizontal should extend from horizontal to line AB on the left (θ1) and to line YX on the right (θ2).

p. 30, Figure 2.15. Most of the angles are not drawn accurately (an interesting exercise for the reader is to draw them correctly).

p. 45 Figure 2.25. The ratio of V2/V1 should be 2.

p. 59, Figure 2.36. Please ignore the sentence "Vertical and horizontal are transposed".

p. 71, gray box in middle of page. The condition to remember is that V2 > V1, not the reverse.

p. 85, third sentence of section 3.3.3 should read "...is equal to EA + PC + CQ + BG."

p. 105, sixth sentence of first full paragraph. Should be an "i" instead of a "1" in the subscript for tif2. (In the fifth sentence, it is a dashed line, not dotted, that connects Rr and Rf).

p. 127, first sentence after eqn 3.77. Point H , not point F (so "...defines point H on the surface").

p. 135 Figure 3.36. Points C and D are missing from the right side of the top panel.

p. 135 Eqns 3.82 and 3.83. Should have a negative sign on the right side of the equals.

p. 141, Problems 3.1-3.3. The text for these problems was omitted and the figures are not on the DVD. So here they are:

p. 175, Figure 4.14. Arrow on left edge should only extend over the top three layers.

p. 177, last sentence first paragraph. "bests" should be "best".

p. 178, Figure 4.15. The lefthand scale of the middle plot should be multiplied by 10 (so 10,000 instead of 1000). Note that the x in the line-fit equations was intended to refer to the plotted coordinate, which is actually x2.

p. 193, second equation from top of page. zy should be zn. Third equation. Remove the exponent of 1/2 from the definition of z.

p. 196, Figure 4.22. (a) should be labeled with Equation 4.45, (b) with Equation 4.46, as the caption asserts.

p. 197, Eqn 4.53. The last term should have a 4 in the denominator, not 32, and that whole squared term should be multiplied by 1/8.

p. 207, Figure 4.27(b). Under "Water table multiple", should be Irfl0 (the "l" was omitted).

p. 231, Figure 4.39(a). The elevation of the dashed line marked "Datum" should be noted as ed.

p. 235, Second gray textbox. "...500 and 3000 ms" should be m/s, not ms.

p. 296, Equation 5.36. Ignore the minus sign in front of the 1/2 in the exponent of the denominator of the first term in both parts of the equation.

p. 299 Figure 5.18(b) and (c). "a = 1m" should be dropped from both (a varies in these plots).

p. 386, Eqn. 6.41. Subscript for ρ should be "c", not "2".

p. 423, Problem 6.11. Data table Conn_Data missing. The missing table can be downloaded here. Columns are distance in meters and Bouguer anomaly in mGal. A version that can be opened directly in GravMag is here.

p. 438, equation 7.9. FEshould equal the square root of HE2 and ZE2 (replace the second HE2 with ZE2). Also, YE should have an HE on the right side of the equation. [Errata corrected12/6/23]

p. 469, Table 7.3.

p. 508, between Eqn 8.11 and 8.12. Should be H/m, not F/m.

Thanks to Abdelali Fadil of the Cadi Ayyad University, Marrakesh, for identifying several of these mistakes.

p. 175, Figure 4.14. Arrow on left edge should only extend over the top three layers.

p. 177, last sentence first paragraph. "bests" should be "best".

p. 299 Figure 5.18(b) and (c). "a = 1m" should be dropped from both (a varies in these plots).

Ch. 5, dynamic tables 5-5 and 5-6. Newer versions of Excel complain about these; updated tables can be downloaded here.

p. 469, Table 7-3. There was an error in the Excel file that created this table. A revised version (MS Word file) can be downloaded here. This is a revised correction posted 6/16/10. A replacement for dynamic table 7-3 (on the CD) is here (link fixed 6/30/23).

p. 508, line after eqn 8.10 "f < 107 Hz" should be "f > 107 Hz"

p. 508, between Eqn 8.11 and 8.12. Should be H/m, not F/m.

p. 516, eqn 8.16 is missing a μ0 (mu-naught) in the numerator on the right side of the equation (compare to eqn. 8.17)

p. 527, eqn. 8.49, l/4 λ (1/4 lambda) = 20 cm, not 2 cm

p. 535, Fig. 8.20(c), for clarity, the "V" should have a subscript "1"

CD: Please replace dynamic tables 5-5 and 5-6 with files updated for newer versions of Excel , table 6-8 with this corrected version, table 6-9 with this corrected version and table 7-3 with this corrected Excel file. Table 7-3 is a revised correction posted 6/16/10. Note that updaters to the software are available elsewhere

Thanks to Greg Mountain, Don Steeples, Xavier Perez. Leslie Sonder, Heather Lehto, Zach Albert, Cliff Thurber, Abdelali Fadil and others for pointing out some of the above.
