View from a subsummit just north of Carson Pass from 2006 SNEP/SN Drips workshop. Initial view to north toward Red Lake Peak. Foreground is 15 Ma block-and-ash flow tuff; shoulder summit at left has younger basalt flows (7 Ma). Fluvial section towards right is capped by block-and-ash flow tuff at summit of Red Lake Peak; paleocanyon wall of old metamorphic rocks are to lower right (geology info from Busby et al., GSA Bull, in press 2006). Moving to right is view over Red Lake towards Hope Valley and more distant peaks (Markleeville Peak is the bald peak above the right edge of Red Lake). Elephant's Back, Round Top, and the Sisters are left-to-right south along and just west of the crest. Farther right Kirkwood ski area is visible above the let edge of Caples Lake. Black Butte (in front of Caples Lake and to the left of it) is doubled up by a processing glitch. October 9, 2006 .
