View from near the lighthouse near Pillar Point. Initial view to the east over Farewell Spit (left), which separates the Tasman Sea (left) from Golden Bay (right). Beyond the Bay are the headlands of the Marlborough Sounds, a region of drowning topography as the subduction system of the Pacific under the Australian plate moves southward. Turning left, Mt. Taranaki (Egmont) can be seen to the north (above a notch in the plants and a bit right of the little offset in the horizon). Farther left is Cape Farewell (first more distant hill left of the hill with the lighthouse, which is just visible just below the horizon). The valley to the left is the Wharariki valley. Farther left are the hills to the north of Takaka and, returning to the ocean, the hills over Golden Bay at the right are part of Abel Tasman National Park. Just to the left of those hills is the mouth of tasman Bay. January, 2013
