Panorama 8/22/19 from The Saddle trail near Crystal Lake, Rocky Mtn NP.
Hide... Looking downstream is Lawn Lake with Deer Mountain in the distance beyond the lake's outlet; up and to the left is Mummy Mountain. To the right, Crystal Lake and Little Crystal Lake are just visible below the steep face of Fairchild Mountain. The Saddle lies up the trail at the low point on the horizon. Hagues Peak's summit is cut off but is above the slopes farther to the right.
Geologically, nearby bedrock is the Hagues Peak Granite ("Silver Plume", c. 1.4 Ga) out to about Mummy Mountain and Lawn Lake. The Longs Peak Granite underlies much of the terrain farther east and south. Lawn Lake was enlarged as a reservoir for irrigation in 1903; the dam failed in 1982, leaving the prominent bathtub ring from the 1903-1982 reservoir plus exposure of the natural lakebed owing to downcutting through the moraine at the outlet in the 1982 flood. Some of the knobs to the left of Crystal Lake appear to be almost reverse roche mouttonnes, with the steep side facing uphill instead of downhill. Return to panorama index page |
