Panorama 8/15/19 from near the summit of Shoshoni Peak, Indian Peaks Wilderness, Roosevelt NF.
Hide... Initial view east over (from near to far) Isabelle Lake, Long Lake, Brainard Lake and, up to the right, Lefthand Reservoir. The broad ridge to the right is Niwot Ridge; beyond that are peaks above Boulder (left) and near Golden Gate State Park near Golden (right). The near crag is the true summit of Shoshoni Peak. Farther right (south) are some more distant peaks of the Indian Peaks. Peak with a prominent bergschrund under it is Navajo Peak (the Navajo glacier below); the summit with the broad slope farther right is Apache Peak. Farther right are the distant peaks of the Gore Range. North of west is Granby Reservoir; beyond it are the Rabbit Ears Range and, in the distance, snow capped peaks of the Park Range. Farther right the Never Summer Mountains in Rocky Mountain National Park appear on the skyline over the nearby gorge of Cascade Creek. Looking well to the right, beyond shaded Mt. Toll, is the distinctive flat top of Longs Peak. To the right above a snowfield is Pawnee Peak (a trail of us to its summit is visible). The highest peak farther right is Mt. Audobon.
Geologically, nearby bedrock is the Longs Peak batholith granite ("Silver Plume", c. 1.4 Ga). Older metamorphic rocks form the ridge beyond Cascade Creek and in the distance to the east (near Lefthand Reservoir). From Mt. Audobon across the outlet area of Isabelle Lake and onto the nearer part of Niwot Ridge are Laramide intrusives of the Mt. Audobon stock. The gentle summit landform may be a modified remnant of an Eocene unconformity; undated sedimentary deposits on Niwot Ridge might record a pre-glacial river system. Otherwise landforms strongly reflect glacial erosion. Return to panorama index page |
