This is the web page for the Atmospheric Chemistry II Course at CU-Boulder (CHEM/ATOC-5152). It will be co-taught by Profs. Paul Ziemann and Jose-Luis Jimenez in Spring 2015 under the name CHEM-6111 (Special Topics in Analytical Chemistry), while the formal course will be created later.

Topics for Spring 2015

  • Aerosol mechanics
    • Size distributions
    • Condensation / evaporation and coagulation
    • Gas/particle partitioning and VBS
    • Diffusion and in-particle reactions
    • Aerosol loss mechanisms and inlets
  • Introduction to Chambers and Reactors
    • Large Environmental Chambers
    • Oxidation Flow Reactors
  • Introduction to Aerosol Instrumentation
  • Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometry (CIMS) (Jose)
    • Fundamentals and reaction mechanisms
      • Predicting reaction rates
    • Properties of key CIMS systems: H3O+, acetate, I-, NO3-
    • PTRMS
    • Reading: I- ToF-CIMS paper
  • Other possible topics
