In his 1897 investigation of the destroyed 1885 obelisk erected to the memory of Major T. J. Willans in Shillong, Oldham examined the location and throw of individual masonry blocks (drawn by Tom LaTouche) in an attempt to quantify acceleration and directions during shaking. The Willans monument was reconstructed after the 1897 earthquake (2004 photo in the grounds of The Shillong Club).
