R.D. Oldham's articles 1885-1898

Oldham covers a lot of ground in this decade, starting with a description of his findings of permo-carboniferous glaciation in Australia, and a description of river avulsion in the Punjab. His summary of all available articles on the Geology of India in 1888 was a prelude to him rewriting the Manual of Geology in 1893. He gave copy of his bibliography to the Judd Library with the following inscription:

William Erskine Baker of the Royal Engineers intended the 53 km long cross-section from which the above section was drafted to accompany his 1846 article on leveling northward from the Allah Bund, but the plate was ommitted from his article and lost for 42 years until re-discovered by Oldham (1898) in Bombay. The importance of this leveling line is that until the turn of the millennium was the only geodetic measurement of across the Allah Bund. In a discussion meeting at the Royal Geographical Society in London, following a presentation by Freyre, Oldham owned to never having visited the Allah Bund, yet his discovery of Wynne's copy of Baker's profile marked a turning point in its study.
