From Rugby to the Andaman Islands
In 1874 Oldham (age 16) publishes a 7 page article on the Chalk of southern England in the Rugby school Journal of Natural History. Geology was taught by the Rev. J. M. Wilson in the third year of a four year course for students taking natural sciences. and the Rugby Nat. Hist. Soc. was founded in 1867 and held 12 meetings a year with an attendance of 25-32. In 1868 there were 16 meetings.
Oldham's 1897 glossary contains numerous mining terms but defines an earthquake."A shaking of the earth's surface by some subterranean force. It is a wave of elastic compression produced in the crust of the earth by some sudden exertion of force in the interior"
In a note following Oldham's Naini Tal article Medlicott speaks of the 22 year old Oldham:
"My youngest colleague Mr. Richard D. Oldham, happening to be in Kumaon at the time, I asked him to give me an account of the disastrous landslip at Naini Tal. The foregoing excellent paper is the result . It is Mr Oldham's first contribution to the publications of the Survey and the accurate observation and strict reasoning, and good form it evinces, give high promise of fruitful work to come. "
Three years later Medlicott in his 1883 report (22 Jan 1884) remarks of Oldham's Jaonsar findings in the lower Himalaya near Simla.
All this may seem a little wild but a perusal of Mr. Oldham's paper will show that he thoroughly understands what he is about, and has completely protected his position; that if he scorns grooves and is somewhat reckless with antecedent probabilites, he has on the other hand a wholesome faith in close observation and sound reasoning.
