Rocky Mountain Snowstorm of '03

Twin Sisters Valley, Colorado, noon, March 20, 2003. The morning was clear and sunny, so Hans made his daily snow observation and I made the rounds with the camera. Glad I did, because 20 minutes later, low clouds rolled in again and shut out the view. I've been swapping stories with neighbors, some have power and phones, but some do not and are relaying messages out via those who do. People with horses are having a difficult time getting to them, and even then getting them water. I've heard that Magnolia Road (a county road) is plowed about 1-1/2 cars wide. Twin Sisters is shut, shut, shut. We're going to head out after I post this and see how our new skis do in it! (Click on any of the thumbnails for a larger image.)

7:08 a.m. Hans heading out for the morning snow observation.

Her Ladyship has decided to help. (See that ski pole Hans is holding? He's tapping it on the top of the deck railing.)

Morning observation. 5" more since yesterday, for a grand total of 53" for the storm, and 8.1" of water equivalent. Ah, spring snow in the Rockies!

Semi, on top of the hot tub. Curiouser and curiouser.

Conehead.

South meadow.

Wagon wheel. (No, snowshoes. Well, OK, I'll be more accurate: "snowshoes in snowbank over wagon wheel.")

Vehicles. I suppose we'll have to start digging them out, sooner than later.

Morning at the bird feeder.

Sunlight!

The driveway. Ha!

Noon. Remember the piano studio window from yesterday? Here's what it looks like after we shovelled the roof, and then shovelled the snow back that had stacked against the windows.

The window next to my computer. It looks southeast, over the roof of the birdfeeder deck, this roof we haven't been shovelling. That's it for now, our skis are beckoning!
