Rocky Mountain Snowstorm of '03

Twin Sisters Valley, Colorado, Evening, March 19, 2003. I went out to help with the roof-shovelling...we actually saw blue sky at one point. Also tried to work at the hot tub deck (not as you'd notice!) About 5-ish the sun showed through and I actually saw my shadow (does this make me a groundhog, or something?) but then the fog rolled up the valley from Gross reservoir and closed us in again, for some lovely blue light during the evening "time series" photos. (Click on any of the thumbnails for a larger image.)

2:00 p.m. I open the sliding door, and Little Miss Kitty Cat goes charging out like there's no tomorrow...

...and proceeds to use the snow as a litter box. (Yes, well, I'm just about fed up with all of this, myself, dearie.)

Very pleased with Herself, she returns to the house, amidst heavy snowfall. (Echos of the Sopwith Camel, here. Very Fierce. Look Out.)

Meanwhile, Hans has made a lot of progress on the roof. (Yes, this is the same roof he shovelled yesterday morning. Not as you'd notice.)

This is the roof to our music studio. With the piano in it.

He's pointing to the ladder he used to get up there. Arrow is trying to help, but she's too short.

And she's bored.

"Aw. Ferget it."

"OK! (Are we done, now?)" "No, I'm coming up there." "Darn. I was hoping we were going to make a fire."

So, here's the path I take to join Hans, on the roof. (I offered to help, never dreaming that he'd accept!)

Of course, we only have one set of snowshoes, and he's used them to get there. I use this odd combination of post-holing and scrambling on my hands and knees. Arrow helps. (Yes, that is my clothesline.)

Can you hear the jingle for "Green Acres"? (...is the place to be! Oh, by the way, those bumps in the snow in the background? They're the Subaru and the Toyota...)

We look at this and have a discussion: "Are we going to induce an avalanche from the main part of the roof onto this one? Just how stupid is this?" (I, being very macha, proceed to slip and fall. Right onto one of the skylights. Hans tells me that his nightmares last night included actually falling through one of the skylights. He proceeds with the rest of the roof, while I, ever helpful, decide that the snow coming off the roof and hitting the windows below isn't such a good idea, and is really crying out to be moved.)

"Whaddaya think, Arrow?"

And I proceed to work on the underside of the roof. (Aren't the granny glasses a nice touch?)

And Hans decides that the workshop deck needs attention...

...and gives it the ol' "heave-ho!"

6:00 p.m. OK, we're back at the time-series photos, again. I tried to work on the hot tub deck. Not as you'd notice.

Conehead.

South meadow. (Isn't the blue hue to the evening light pretty?)

Wagon wheel (yeah, right.)

Vehicles. 'Night, all. See ya manana. (...maybe! If we have power!)
